Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice (Bar) awarded by BPP University.

Our Barrister Training Course replaces the BPTC that future barristers would previously need to study. Taught by qualified lawyers with extensive practice experience, our new BTC is highly practical, simulating working life in chambers. From day one, you’ll learn to think and act like a barrister.

You will apply your knowledge to realistic legal scenarios of the type you are likely to encounter within pupillage. By developing your advocacy skills throughout, you will focus on learning by doing, so you emerge confident and polished before you step into a courtroom. The Bar is a fiercely competitive profession. That’s why our training is designed to help you gain the extensive knowledge and polished advocacy skills you need to secure pupillage and start your career as a barrister.

On successful completion, you’ll be eligible to be called to the Bar of England and Wales (subject to meeting the qualifying session requirements of your Inn of Court).

Our Barrister Training Course (BTC) covers the integrated knowledge and skills necessary to pass all required assessments, including centralised assessments set by the BSB, and commence pupillage.

You will learn in the context of realistic case studies, many of which are based on real cases that our experienced tutors have encountered in practice. We recommend that you read this important information issued by the Bar Standards Board if you wish to study for the Bar of England and Wales.

BTC modules, structure and assessment

On the BTC you will complete two modules. Both are designed to reflect the level and standard of work you can expect to encounter during your first and second six of pupillage.

You will be assessed through a variety of methods on our BTC, including:

BSB centralised assessments
Coursework (to test written and oral skills)
Examinations (including multiple choice and problem-based questions)
A professional portfolio

Assessments and examinations

The programme features a variety of assessments including coursework and examinations.

Coursework is in the form of essays, reports or case studies, while group or individual presentations may be required to assess other competencies.

Examinations will be with written elements or multiple-choice questions and maybe unseen or part-seen, where assessment material is released in advance. Part-time study is available in our London Holborn centre, with a minimum duration of 20 months — this is comprised of four parts, each lasting four months, plus a summer break. Typically, you will study for 10 hours on one weekend per month.
